Myopia (also known as short-sightedness) is a condition where close-range objects are clear, but objects in the distance are blurry. In school-aged children, they often complain of not being able to see the board or end up squinting across the classroom to try and see clearer. Myopic patients not using myopia control often notice their prescription continues to increase every year and require regular updates to their glasses.
Having myopia increases the risk of retinal detachments, cataracts, glaucoma and blindness - the higher the prescription, the higher the risk! Once you have myopia, it is permanent. However significant research supports using particular methods to reduce the rate of progression. These changes tend to stabilise in the late teen years or early 20s for most people, which is the age group that are keen technology users. Excessive screen use and reading with minimal breaks is associated with myopia onset and progression.
We offer the following options:
- Myopia control glasses (DIMS lenses & multifocals)
- Myopia control soft contact lenses (MiSight lenses)
- Myopia control hard contact lenses (Ortho K lenses)
- Myopia control eye drops (Atropine)
Miyosmart glasses are a great myopia control option, and were released in Australia in 2020 after being successfully launched in countries with a high prevalence of myopia. Miyosmart lenses are $500 + the cost of a frame, and must be worn full time.
Miyosmart glasses are eligible for private health fund rebates.
Similar to Miyosmart glasses, Stellest lenses must be worn full time. These lenses were released in Australia in 2022 and offer a 12 month scratch-resistant warranty. Stellest lenses are $600 + the cost of a frame.

Ortho K lenses are worn at night time to correct your vision, and allow you to see during the day without any need to wear other glasses or contact lenses. These must be worn every night to maintain their effect, and typically last 1-2 years. Our Ortho K package cost is $1800 (or $1400 if you have already been fitted at another clinic, i.e. overseas), which includes:
- 2 lenses (one for each eye)
- 2 warranty lens changes per eye (if required for alterations and fitting)
- First 6 months of cleaning solutions
- First 6 months of aftercare appointments
- Any additional scans required for fitting and monitoring
Replacements for lost or broken lenses outside the first 6 months are $400 each.
Ortho K lenses are eligible for private health fund rebates.
Misight soft contact lenses are worn daily and offer an alternative to wearing glasses while still offering great myopia control. These must be worn at least 6 out of 7 days in the week to achieve myopia control. It is always recommended that patients who wear these lenses also have a spare pair of glasses for times when not wearing them.
MiSight contact lenses are eligible for private health fund rebates.
We use local compounding pharmacies to manufacture atropine eyedrops as needed. We provide a prescription for each child and they can be collected directly from the pharmacy. Prices usually range between $30-50 per month. Glasses must be worn whilst using the eyedrops to achieve the desired control effect.
Atropine eyedrops are sometimes eligible for private health fund rebates, depending on your fund and level of cover.
