Dry Eye

Dry Eye Disease is an eye condition that causes discomfort and sometimes even pain when there are not enough natural tears on the front of the eyes. Unfortunately it is chronic and can worsen if left untreated. Symptoms include red eyes, sore or gritty eyes, blurry vision, burning or watery eyes, sensitivity to light or tired eyes. Depending on the type and severity of dry eye, some people may have one symptom whereas others may have many.

Dry eye typically effects women more than men and becomes more noticeable with age, however it can affect all age groups. Symptoms are often worse with contact lens wear, air conditioning, excessive computer use, connective tissue disorders and when taking certain medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, oral contraceptives, etc). Treatments vary depending on which type of dry eye but typically include eye drops and gels, oral supplements, heat therapy, eyelid cleansers, IPL laser therapy and many more.

If you are having similar issues or think you may be experiencing dry eye, we encourage you to book in with our dedicated team to see what treatments are suitable for you.

DRY EYE TREATMENT COSTS

Over-the-Counter Eye Drops

Lubricating eyedrops for can be used for adding moisture to the eye.  You Optometrist may prescribe them anywhere from once a day to many times a day. An eye test is helpful to determine which brand is right for your type of dry eye.

Lubricant eyedrops can cost anywhere from $10 to $40

Blephasteam and Expression

Controlled, warm moisture heats the eyelids to soften thickened oils within the meibomian glands. The glands are then manually expressed to help clear blockages and improve oil flow into the tear film. Usually 2-5 treatments are done across a few months. Many patients require around 2-3 sessions before noticing a meaningful change in symptoms that lasts.

$75 per session

Punctal Plugs

Tiny temporary plugs are placed into the natural tear drainage openings of the eyelids. By slowing drainage, they help keep natural tears and lubricating drops on the eye for longer. Our temporary punctal plugs last approximately 6 months. They can be replaced after they dissolve if they have been beneficial and repeat treatment remains appropriate.

$75 each /  $150 per pair

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL delivers carefully controlled light pulses to the skin around the eyes. It targets inflammation associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and supports healthier gland function, and a more stable tear film. An initial course of 4 treatments is required. A maintenance or retouch treatment is

then generally recommended every 6-12 months, depending on symptoms and gland health.

$200  per  session / Initial course of 4: $750

ZEST Eyelid Cleanser

An in-office deep clean using the Zocular cleanser (derived from okra) to remove accumulated oils, debris and build-up from the lashes and eyelid margins. Your Optometrist will usually remove any significant build up prior to the cleanser to ensure maximum efficacy. This treatment is particularly useful for blepharitis and persistent eyelid debris. Typically 1-3 treatments across a few months, as needed. The number and spacing depends on the amount of build-up and how quickly it returns.

$100 per treatment / RRP $150

Rinsada

Rinsada is an in-office ocular irrigation treatment using sterile saline to thoroughly rinse the eye surface and the deeper folds beneath the eyelid. It helps flush away irritants and debris that may contribute to ocular surface discomfort.  Performed as needed, depending on your symptoms and ocular surface condition. Your Optometrist will recommend when repeat treatment may be beneficial.

$75 per treatment

Prescription Eye Drops

Steroid Eye Drops - are usually used short-term to help settle ocular surface inflammation and monitored as required.

Cyclosporin Eye Drops - may be recommended for longer-term management of chronic inflammatory dry eye.

$12 to $90 per month
